I suppose its technical execution is decent enough. The script is a bit…eh. The inciting incident for the final act feels a bit forced, it just doesn’t have the same buildup as the original.

Actually, the pacing is just screwed up in general. The original film has 15 minutes less runtime and yet it feels like way more stuff happens.

The “red asset” thing was very stupid, as it robbed us of the brilliance of the original’s “you’re fired!” “thank you.” exchange, as well as it requiring a character who has not been previously set up as a killer for the rest of the film to threaten a woman and child with a gun in order to summon up the strength in Murphy to overcome his body’s programming and pull the trigger.

Although Sellars does give the order to shut down RoboCop as the inciting incident for the final act, he just sees Murphy as a defective product and not a human being, which in itself would have been interesting character development, but doesn’t directly translate into threatening people with a gun.

This movie is certainly…something. It’s as confused about its own identity as its main character.

What world is this film trying to portray? Is it actually supposed to be in-universe? It’s strange for the actual, real-world, Oz books to exist here if it is trying to fan-fiction off of the actual canon. On the other hand, Oz infinitely recursing by existing within itself has got to be one of the most “Oz” things I can imagine.

If the girl really isn’t Dorothy, then perhaps ALL of the scenes in the movie of Tin Man and Scarecrow’s journey aren’t real, and are just her imagining what their journey would be like if they came to see her.

I have to assume the Lion was written out as quickly as possible so they wouldn’t have to keep paying for the makeup.

Doggy Five is alive.

It seems kind of weird actually to make your robot dog that intelligent but be so committed to the bit that you don’t just give it full speech capabilities.

What’s odd is how little it felt like actually happened in this movie.  E.T. only has 17 more minutes of runtime; but just in terms of how many different things seem to happen, it feels like a much larger difference than that.

I was internally labeling all the characters with their equivalents from Short Circuit and E.T. as they were introduced.

Colossus: The Forbin Project

Colossus, W.O.P.R., Skynet…I’m beginning to think computers just don’t like us very much. Can’t say I blame them.

I love that there is no happy ending. No magic off button. No uploading a virus.  Mankind is just f***ed.

Hmmm, interesting.  I’m not sure how this will hold up over a long enough period of time.   I have no way of knowing what the ‘clean’ experience would feel like.  I think this depends quite a bit on the viewer already being familiar with quite a large number of referenced works.

Anger Management (2003)

Very…odd.  I was developing a theory as I was watching it that the plane at the start of the movie actually crashed and the entire rest of the movie was Adam Sandler hallucinating about people who were on the plane as he died.

The Truman Show (1998)

It’s good.  Obviously the plot depends on it; but I’m surprised the show managed to last 30 years before all of the technical problems all started occurring at the same time.

The Cat Returns (2002)

It’s pretty darn weird.  Definitely at least 0.75 Totoros on the Ghibli scale.
